Foreign Languages Education Department (FLED) was founded on April 22, 2002. BA program started the 2012-1013 academic year with 47 students. The main goal of the BA program is to prepare teachers of English as a foreign language to teach at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Taking the latest developments in the field into consideration, students are provided a wide selection of different courses in order to make them fully qualified teachers of English. Graduates from the FLED department can work as teachers of English in high schools, preparatory schools of universities and as research assistants in the English language departments of universities. Department of English Language Teaching was founded on December 28, 1989 and offers a MA program in English Language Teaching. Focusing on research in the field including the latest developments, students are provided a wide selection of various courses in research methods, discourse and communication, ELT methodology, testing, and materials design in order to make them fully qualified teachers and researchers of English. The program with a thesis is based on current issues in teaching and learning English and professional development of language teachers including coursework, individual research, and an oral thesis defence examination.

ELT500 RESEARCH METHODS AND SCIENTIFIC ETHICS IN ELT
The course has some overview and real understanding of the nature, power and the limitations of research in social sciences and familiarize students with research techniques and teach them how to select appropriate techniques for a given set of data.
ELT502 PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATION OF LANGUAGE EDUCATION
The course includes research in language acquisition, differences between child and adult language, similiarities and differences between native and foreign language acquisition.
ELT503 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR ENGLISH FOR ESP
Principles of curriculum development and course design as applied to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) are surveyed. Topics include language functions, notions and speech acts. Principles of functional/notional or communicative syllabuses, strategies and techniques in designing questionnaires and structured interviews to determine student’s language needs; discourse analysis to find out the structure of discourse in the physical and social science texts and teacher training.
ELT505 CLASSROOM DISCURSE IN ELT
Overviews of the research topics; classroom discourse, discourse and gender, narrative ,media discourse and the related theories (pragmatics, Conversation analysis, politeness ) in the field.
ELT506 ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODOLGY
The course includes a review of traditional and current methods of teaching basic language skills to learners of English as a foreign language; reading, writing, listening, speaking.
ELT507 MATERIALS EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
The course consists of methods of evaluating textbooks and adaptation techniques to match course objectives in order to achieve effective language teaching.
ELT508 ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING
Construction of English language tests: item analysis and interpretation of test scores; subjective and objective tests; procedures in preparing different kinds of test items appropriate for testing different language skills; practice in item writing and statistical methods.
ELT509 LITERATURE IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH
The course has an examination of the significant contributions which literature can make to the process and purpose of learning English as a foreign language. Poetry, prose and drama in the EFL classroom. Choosing appropriate texts for different levels of learners in E.L.T
ELT510 CULTURAL ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE TEACHING
The course views language not only as the central feature of culture, but also as the basic medium for its expression, the teaching of culture is an integral organized component of the course content in foreign language teaching. Rationales for culture teaching, attitudes to foreign cultures, sources of cultural data, culture teaching materials are provided in the course.
ELT511 THEORIES OF SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
The course includes analysis of major theories of second language acquisition, each theory to be examined with respect to second language development, relations between first and second language acquisition, and second language research.
ELT512 SOCIOLINGUISTICS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
A survey of sociolinguistic theories and research findings which illuminate the learning and use of English as a foreign language, with particular emphasis on practical applications.
ELT513 TEACHER TRAINING IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Training the teacher trainers in various aspects of English as a foreign language in Turkey is taken into consideration.
ELT514 EDUCATONAL TECHNOLOGY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
The nature, scope and application of instructional technology systems to English Language Teaching is lectured. The students learn the use of software and hardware in language laboratories, video programs, microcomputers, and other media. They select and evaluate instructional media in learning English.
ELT515 ENGLISH-TURKISH CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS
The course includes comparison of English and Turkish structures with special emphasis on transfer problems from either language.
ELT516 SELECTED TOPICS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
Readings and discussions on selected topics in English language teaching is administered in the class. Content may vary form one year to another.
ELT800 SPECIAL STUDIES
A course designed to introduce students to topics of contemporary importance or special interest that fall outside the scope of the curriculum. Supervisor discusses problems related to individual’s MA level work and guides MA level students to generate new ideas in their particular research areas. The course is aimed to enhance research in the field of English Language Teaching.
ELT598 MASTER’S THESIS
Design and completion of an original project under the supervision of a thesis advisor on a specific topic in the area of specialization selected in accordance with the particular interest of the student.
