ELT 501 RESEARCH METHODS IN ELT 3 -5

The objective is to provide some overview and real understanding of the nature, power and the limitations of research in social sciences and familiarize students with research techniques and teach them how to select appropriate techniques for a given set of data.

ELT 502 PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF LANGUAGE EDUCATION 3 - 5

Research in language acquisition. Differences between child and adult language. Similiarities and differences between native and foreign language acquisition.

ELT 503 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR ENGLISH FOR ESP 3 - 5

Principles of curriculum development and course design as applied to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) are surveyed. Topics include language functions, notions and speech acts. Principles of functional/notional or communicative syllabuses, strategies and techniques in designing questionnaires and structured interviews to determine student’s language needs; discourse analysis to find out the structure of discourse in the physical and social science texts and teacher training.

ELT 505 CLASSROOM DISCOURSE IN E.L.T. 3 - 5

Overviews of the research topics; classroom discourse, discourse and gender, narrative ,media discourse and the related theories (pragmatics, Conversation analysis, politeness ) in the field.

Independent work on various topics in the field of English Language Teaching. .Presentation of these studies in departmental seminars.

ELT 751-799 TERM PROJECT 3 - 5

A one-semester research project supervised by a faculty member. The project topic is determined by the supervisor and the student in the field of English Language Teaching. A written final report of the project is required at the end of the semester.

ELT 800-851 SPECIAL STUDIES

A course designed to introduce students to topics of contemporary importance or special interest that fall outside the scope of the curriculum. Supervisor discusses problems related to individual’s MA level work and guides MA level students to generate new ideas in their particular research areas. The course is aimed to enhance research in the field of English Language Teaching.
